The 2-day Refresher Course is for First Aiders whose current certificate is still valid but due to expire. It updates their first aid knowledge and skills.
If a certificate has already expired, the full 3-day course must be taken again.
To pass, candidates need to score at least 75% in the final assessment. Those who pass will receive a new certificate that allows them to continue as a First Aider for another three years.
Aims & objectives
This course helps refresh and update a First Aider’s skills and knowledge so they can respond confidently in an emergency.
It’s open to anyone who holds a valid First Aid at Work certificate issued under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
First aid certificates last for three years. To renew it, you must complete this 2-day refresher course within one month of your certificate expiring. If you leave it any longer, you’ll need to retake the full 3-day course.

What You Will Learn
By the end of the course, successful candidates will be able to:
Give emergency first aid at work
Help someone with:
- Broken bones, sprains, or suspected spinal injuries
- Chest injuries
- Burns or scalds
- Eye injuries
- Poisoning
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
Recognise the signs of serious illness and give suitable first aid
Understand the responsibilities of a first aider, including:
- Preventing infection
- Recording what happened and the steps taken
- Using first aid equipment properly
Assess a situation quickly and take the right action in an emergency
Give first aid to someone who is:
- Unconscious (including during a seizure)
- Not breathing and needs CPR
- Choking
- Bleeding
- In shock
- Treat minor injuries correctly
Assessment & certification
If you pass the course and exam, you’ll get a certificate that is valid for three years.
