The 3-day First Aid at Work Course runs over three full days and includes a final assessment. It follows the topics set out in the First Aid at Work Regulations 1981 – Approved Code of Practice 2009.
To pass, candidates must score at least 75% in the exam. Once completed, they’ll receive a certificate that allows them to work as a First Aider in the workplace for three years.
Aims & objectives
The First Aid at Work course trains staff who have been chosen to act as First Aiders. It teaches them how to respond in a workplace emergency.
By the end of the course, they’ll be able to care for someone who is injured or seriously ill until professional medical help arrives.

What You Will Learn
By the end of the course, successful candidates will be able to:
- Give emergency first aid at work
- Treat someone with:
- Broken bones, sprains, and suspected spinal injuries
- Chest injuries
- Burns or scalds
- Eye injuries
- Poisoning
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Recognise serious illnesses and give suitable first aid
- Understand the responsibilities of a first aider, including:
- How to avoid cross-infection
- Recording what happened and what actions were taken
- Using first aid equipment
- Assess a situation quickly and safely, and take the right action in an emergency
- Give first aid to someone who is:
- Unconscious (including during a seizure)
- Not breathing and needs CPR
- Choking
- Bleeding
- In shock
- Treat minor injuries effectively
Assessment & certification
If you pass the course and exam, you’ll get a certificate that is valid for three years.
